Mavericks is legal for you to install on as many Macs as you own in your own household. So for example, you can go right from SL to Mavericks without having to install Mountain Lion first. Any version of OS X which is Snow Leopard (10.6.x) or newer can be upgraded to Mavericks without having to purchase and install anything in between.
